Use of Infinitives

 (To + verb) কখনো past tense হয় না

 Infinitives are a grammatical form of verbs that are not conjugated to show tense, person, or number. They are typically preceded by the word "to" in English, hence the term "to-infinitive." In English, infinitives can function as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs within a sentence.

 Infinitives হল ক্রিয়াপদের ব্যাকরণগত রূপ যা কাল, ব্যক্তি বা সংখ্যা দেখানোর জন্য সংযোজিত হয় না। এগুলি সাধারণত ইংরেজিতে "to" শব্দের আগে থাকে, তাই শব্দটি "to-infinitive"। ইংরেজিতে, infinitives একটি বাক্যের মধ্যে বিশেষ্য, বিশেষণ বা ক্রিয়াবিশেষণ হিসাবে কাজ করতে পারে।

 

For example: উদাহরণ স্বরূপ:

 

As a Noun:

• ü To swim is my favorite activity. (Subject of the sentence) 
•      সাঁতার কাটা আমার প্রিয় কাজ।
• ü She likes to dance. (Direct object of the verb "likes") 
•      সে নাচতে পছন্দ করে।
• ü To err is human. 
•      মানুষ মাত্রই ভুল করে.

ü As an Adjective:

• ü She has a book to read. (Modifies the noun "book")
• তার পড়ার জন্য একটি বই আছে।
• ü This is a good place to eat. (Modifies the noun "place")
•  এটি খাওয়ার জন্য একটি ভাল জায়গা।

As an Adverb:

• ü He works hard to succeed. (modifies the verb "works")
• সে সফল হওয়ার জন্য কঠোর পরিশ্রম করে।
• ü She ran fast to catch the bus. (modifies the verb "ran")
•  সে বাস ধরতে দ্রুত দৌড়ে গেল।
• ü Kamal went to market to buy fish.
• কামাল মাছ কিনতে বাজারে গেলেন।

                            

                                Be + infinitive

Be can be followed by a to-infinitive. This structure is used to talk about plans and arrangements. (পরিকল্পনা সম্পর্কে কথা বলতে ব্যবহৃত হয়)

• I am to meet him tomorrow.
• আমি আগামীকাল তার সাথে দেখা করতে যাচ্ছি।
• He is to arrive soon.
• শীঘ্রই তার আসার কথা।
• They are to get married next month.
• আগামী মাসে তাদের বিয়ে হওয়ার কথা।

Be + infinitive can also be used to give commands or orders.

• You are to finish your homework before you go to bed.
•  ঘুমাতে যাওয়ার আগে তোমার  বাড়ির কাজ শেষ করতে হবে।
• You are to sit in that corner and keep quiet.
• তুমি ঐ কোণে বসে চুপ করে থাকো।
• 
  
• You are not to misbehave with the servants.
• চাকরদের সাথে খারাপ ব্যবহার করবেন না।

Be + perfect infinitive

A perfect infinitive (to have + past participle) can be used after be to show that a planned event did not happen.


They were to have been married last month, but had to postpone the marriage.

গত মাসে তাদের বিয়ে হওয়ার কথা ছিল, কিন্তু বিয়ে পিছিয়ে দিতে হয়েছিল।

Be + passive infinitive

Be+ passive infinitive (to be + past participle) is often used in notices and instructions. নোটিশ এবং নির্দেশাবলী।

• This medicine is to be taken twice daily.
• এই ওষুধটি দিনে দুবার খেতে হবে।
• The sticker on this bottle is not to be removed.
• এই বোতলের স্টিকার সরানো যাবে না।
• This book is not to be resold.
• এই বই পুনরায় বিক্রি করা হবে না.
